Nageshwar Jyotirling, situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from Gujarat Dwarkapuri, this temple comes in the way while going to Dwarka. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is among the oldest Jyotirlingas mentioned in Shiva Purana.
According to Shiv Purana, Nageshwar is in Jyotirlinga ‘Drukavana’, which is the ancient name of a forest in India and the mention of ‘Darukavana’ is found in Indian epics like Kamyakavan, Dwaitavana, Dandakvan. According to the legend of Shiva Purana, there was a monster named Darukka who made the devotee and a few people detained by the devotees named Supriya from the middle of the sea.
Daraika imprisoned these people in the city of Daruwavanna, a city located under the sea. Supriya asked all the prisoners to epiclesis Shiva and pray to him for safety. Seeing this the demon Daruka become very angry and wanted to kill Supriya but before he could strike Shiva appeared saved Supriya and killed the demon. But there was still more work, the monster was a husband of a Daruka who was a devotee of Parvati.
Daruka received the blessings from Goddess Parvati to be the queen of the forest. This forest was called ‘Darukvan‘. The jungle used to follow Daruki wherever she used to go. Many monsters used to live in Darukvan.
To save all the demons Daruki shifted the jungle in the sea with the power from Parvati Ji.
It was difficult for anyone to come here, so many people were kept captive here by the Darukka and the Daruki. But when Supriya came here things changed. He taught all the prisoners to recite ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, the mantra of Shiva, and Shiva ji in person came to save him from Daruka. Supriya also established Shivling there.
To kill Daruki and other demons Shivji gave a weapon to Supriya which saved everyone’s life and the demons were destroyed. The lingam which Supriya had established was called Nagesh; This is the tenth Jyotirlingam. Goddess Parvati was known as Nageshwari and Shiva embraced Jyotirlinga with the name of Nageshwar.
